While smoking has fallen out of fashion among celebrities, vaping has quietly taken its place.
According to the Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction, an estimated 114 million people vape worldwide – and more than half of them are former smokers.
Though not risk-free, vaping is widely recognised as a harm reduction tool, helping millions quit or cut down on traditional cigarettes.
Here are some of the stars who’ve been spotted (or confessed to) enjoying a vape.
Selena Gomez
The Only Murders in the Building star made headlines this week after fans spotted what looked like a vape in a behind-the-scenes video from her wedding to Benny Blanco.
In the clip, filmed by best friend Taylor Swift, Gomez sits in front of a mirror as her veil is being placed, before quickly trying to hide the device once she realises she’s on camera.
While fans were divided, many defended her, noting that vaping is far less harmful than smoking and can be used to manage anxiety or chronic pain. This is particularly relevant given her lupus diagnosis.
Maura Higgins
Before jetting off for I’m a Celebrity, Maura, 34, was photographed stocking up on boxes of her favourite vape, Flum’s “Ruby Yellow.” The former Love Islander was seen clutching three boxes of vapes in one hand as she left a meeting with her management company in London.
Emilia Clarke
From London streets to Italian getaways, the Game of Thrones star has been spotted vaping on several occasions. Clarke switched to vapes years ago, reflecting a wider move among actors to ditch tobacco for a less toxic alternative.
Katie Piper
While she’s managed to keep it off camera, Piper admitted on an ITV podcast that she used to sneak a vape in the downstairs loo so her husband wouldn’t find out. The TV presenter, author and activist had previously quit smoking.
Sophie Turner
A long-time vaper, the Game of Thrones actress reportedly favours “crème brûlée” flavour pods. Co-star Jennifer Lawrence even joked that Turner once teared up mid-scene after her Juul was confiscated.
Kylie Jenner
The youngest Kardashian sister isn’t shy about sharing her vape moments. In a Snapchat video last year, Jenner puffed away in her car and even showed off some vapour tricks.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Hollywood’s most famous vaper, DiCaprio was spotted using his vape at the Oscars back in 2014 – long before it became mainstream. Despite new restrictions, the actor is still regularly seen enjoying a vape at events.
Angela Rayner
The former Deputy PM admits her kids call her a “vape dragon.” She’s publicly said she wishes she could quit, citing the cost and addictive nature of disposable vapes – but like many ex-smokers, she’s still using them as a harm reduction tool.
