{"id":12611,"date":"2024-11-11T10:33:54","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/eu-wont-meet-its-smoke-free-target-for-76-years-shock-new-report-finds\/"},"modified":"2025-01-07T12:08:24","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T12:08:24","slug":"eu-wont-meet-its-smoke-free-target-for-76-years-shock-new-report-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/eu-wont-meet-its-smoke-free-target-for-76-years-shock-new-report-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"EU won\u2019t meet its \u2018smoke-free\u2019 target for 76 years, shock new report finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"clear-before-content-2\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"clear-2540544802\"><img src=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/caafc5c68900198b80aee12c11b50184.avif\" alt=\"\"   style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/div><p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">The European Union (EU) won\u2019t meet its target to be \u2018smoke free\u2019 for another 76 years, a major new report has found.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The EU has set itself a goal of being declared smoke free, defined by the World Health Organisation as having a smoking rate of under five per cent, by 2040.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">But new analysis from global research body Smoke Free Sweden reveals that at the current trajectory, the EU won\u2019t meet its target until 2100 &#8211; an astonishing six decades behind schedule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The report <a href=\"https:\/\/smokefreesweden.org\/wp-content\/themes\/smokefreesweden\/assets\/pdf\/data\/SFS_Missing%20the%20target_1%20Nov%202024.pdf\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Missing the Target<\/a> says: \u201cThe European Union\u2019s own evidence shows that its current tobacco control strategies are falling short of achieving a smoke free society by 2040.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"\"><p>\u201cDespite efforts such as taxation, public smoking bans and awareness campaigns, smoking rates across the EU remain high, with only modest declines.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Sweden expects to be smoke free in one week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The findings come as Sweden &#8211; which makes nicotine alternatives widely available to smokers wanting to switch &#8211; is set to become the first \u2018smoke free\u2019 country in the world in just one week\u2019s time. This is a year ahead of its target &#8211; and 16 years ahead of the EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The report, which analysed data from public opinion survey <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eurobarometer\/surveys\/detail\/2995\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Special Eurobarometer 539<\/a>, says: \u201cIn contrast, Sweden is leading the way by adopting a tobacco harm reduction (THR) approach, demonstrating that focusing on reduced-risk products can yield significant progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Meanwhile in the EU, 24 per cent of adults are still smoking &#8211; only a one per cent decrease from 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cAt this rate, the EU may not reach its target until 2100, highlighting the need for more effective and modernised strategies,\u201d the report says. \u201cMeanwhile, Sweden is on the verge of becoming smoke free, thanks to its focus on alternative nicotine products such as snus, nicotine pouches, vapes and heated tobacco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The report says that Sweden\u2019s approach of lowering taxes on safer nicotine alternatives while raising taxes on cigarettes has been \u201chighly effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">It says: \u201cBy making these alternatives accessible, acceptable and affordable, Sweden is set to meet its 2025 smoke free target ahead of schedule. In contrast, countries such as Ireland and the Netherlands, which have imposed bans and restrictions on these products, are seeing minimal progress or even stagnation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Smoking rates across Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"\" class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"center\">\n<div id=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"\"><em id=\"\">Source: Missing the Target, Smoke Free Sweden<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Ireland\u2019s smoking rate is TRIPLE that of Sweden\u2019s, despite both setting the same 2025 smoke free target. Similarly, countries including Belgium, Denmark and Finland, where strict regulations have limited the use of reduced-risk products, have seen little improvement in smoking rates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The data highlights the unintended negative consequences of over-regulating vapes and other nicotine alternatives. In Estonia, it says, smoking rates have surged by 40 per cent following the introduction of tight vaping restrictions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cThis trend suggests that excessive regulation can drive smokers back to traditional cigarettes, undermining efforts to reduce smoking-related health risks,\u201d the report says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cAccording to the Eurobarometer survey, the use of reduced-risk products such as e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches and heated tobacco remains low across the EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"\"><p>\u201cHowever, these products offer significant potential for reducing smoking rates, especially if supported by public health policies that promote their safe use.
