{"id":12849,"date":"2024-10-16T11:34:10","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T11:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/banning-vape-flavours-in-canada-will-harm-public-health-and-put-youth-at-more-risk-advocacy-group-warns\/"},"modified":"2025-01-06T16:09:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T16:09:46","slug":"banning-vape-flavours-in-canada-will-harm-public-health-and-put-youth-at-more-risk-advocacy-group-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/banning-vape-flavours-in-canada-will-harm-public-health-and-put-youth-at-more-risk-advocacy-group-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Banning vape flavours in Canada will harm public health and put youth at MORE risk, advocacy group warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"clear-before-content-2\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"clear-3154532462\"><img src=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/caafc5c68900198b80aee12c11b50184.avif\" alt=\"\"   style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/div><p id=\"\"><strong>A ban on flavoured vapes in Canada would have \u201cdevastating public health consequences,\u201d a vaping advocacy group has warned.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecva.org\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Vaping Association<\/a> (CVA) says the proposed legislation undermines the country\u2019s goal of becoming \u2018smoke-free\u2019 (defined as a smoking rate of under five per cent) by 2035, as it withdraws an important aid for smokers wanting to quit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Failing to address the root causes of youth vaping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The move would also put young people more at risk, the CVA says, by failing to address the root causes of them choosing to vape &#8211; such as stress, anxiety, depression and peer pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">In a statement, the CVA said: \u201cWe must acknowledge and not ignore that more than 1.5 million adult vapers in Canada use flavoured vaping products to stop smoking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cWe agree underage youth should not vape, however, more needs to be done through education and providing the necessary tools for parents, teachers, coaches, and community members, to understand the underlying issues as to why youth are vaping and providing solutions to solve their nicotine dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Flavoured vapes help smokers quit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The CVA accuses tobacco control lobbyists &#8211; who are pushing for the law &#8211; of failing to recognise Canada\u2019s \u201cprogressive approach to vaping,\u201d which it says is key to reaching the national goal of becoming smoke-free.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"\"><p>The group said: \u201cVaping serves as a vital harm-reduction tool, helping smokers quit while reducing the devastating toll of smoking, which claims 48,000 lives annually.&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cCanada\u2019s Tobacco Strategy focuses on 1) changing behaviour to save lives and helping Canadians quit smoking using the harm-reduction techniques that work for them and recognises vaping as the most effective harm reduction tool, 2) meeting people where they are: understanding why youth are vaping, addressing those issues of mental health and protecting youth from nicotine addiction before it gets out of hand, and 3) ensuring no person is left behind: reduce health disparities and address the stigma around smoking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Enforcing existing regulations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CVA says the most effective strategy to curb youth access to vapes is better enforcement of existing regulations. This includes imposing substantial fines and suspending licences for non-compliant businesses, as well as tackling the illicit trade.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"\"><p>It said: \u201cThis approach has proven successful in other regulated industries, such as cannabis and alcohol, where compliance ensures responsible marketplace operation.
