{"id":14101,"date":"2024-05-16T09:44:55","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T09:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/ireland-raises-smoking-age-limit-to-21-but-holds-vaping-at-18\/"},"modified":"2025-01-06T16:38:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T16:38:36","slug":"ireland-raises-smoking-age-limit-to-21-but-holds-vaping-at-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/ireland-raises-smoking-age-limit-to-21-but-holds-vaping-at-18\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland raises smoking age limit to 21 &#8211; but holds vaping at 18."},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Ireland aims to become the first country in the European Union to ban smoking among under-21s.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The proposed new legislation will not apply to alternative nicotine products such as vapes because of \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d that they pose a health risk to adults.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The legal age for vaping was raised in December from 16 to 18, and there are currently no plans to increase it again.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">It comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/clearing-the-air-site.webflow.io\/post\/landmark-report-proves-nicotine-use-does-not-lead-to-tobacco-related-disease\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a landmark report<\/a> in Sweden titled \u201cLess Smoke, Less Harm\u201d found that nicotine does not lead to tobacco-related illness and death.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">A Department of Health spokesperson told the Irish Medical Times: \u201cAt this point in time, there is insufficient evidence of health harms to adults to justify this restriction applying to nicotine inhaling products. However, the Minister (for Health) will continue to monitor the emerging evidence and keep such a measure under review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said the new law would make it far less likely that children and young people will be able to access \u201clethal\u201d cigarettes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">He said: \u201cThis is a tough new measure, but the health impacts of tobacco smoking are immense and require tough responses. I am determined to progress legislation that will protect children and young people from this lethal product and ultimately save lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"\"><p>\u201cI am confident this measure will help young people avoid a lifetime of addiction and illness from tobacco smoking. Analysis from the US Institute of Medicine shows that increasing the age of sale to 21 will act to limit the social sources of cigarettes for our children and young people under 18 as they will be less likely to be in social groups with persons who can legally purchase cigarettes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"\">It is hoped that the new legislation will cut smoking rates in Ireland.
