{"id":20657,"date":"2025-02-14T09:22:46","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T09:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/?p=20657"},"modified":"2025-02-21T10:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T10:16:08","slug":"smoking-rates-in-new-zealand-have-fallen-twice-as-fast-as-australia-new-expert-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/smoking-rates-in-new-zealand-have-fallen-twice-as-fast-as-australia-new-expert-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Smoking rates in New Zealand have fallen TWICE as fast as Australia, new expert study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"clear-before-content-2\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"clear-1038620086\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.broughton-group.com\/nicotine?utm_campaign=43296353-Clearing%20the%20Air%20PPC%20Campaign%20-%202026&#038;utm_source=ppc&#038;utm_medium=Paid%20Ads\" aria-label=\"728 x 90 (2)\"><img src=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/728-x-90-2.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/728-x-90-2.png 728w, https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/728-x-90-2-300x37.png 300w, https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/728-x-90-2-370x46.png 370w, https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/728-x-90-2-600x74.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New study compares New Zealand\u2019s progressive policies on vapes with Australia\u2019s restrictive approach.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adult daily smoking rates in New Zealand <\/strong><strong>fell by 10 per cent per year over seven years.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In contrast, Australia\u2019s smoking rate dropped by only five per cent per year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The decline in smoking mirrored the vaping rates in the two countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smoking rates fell three times faster in New Zealand\u2019s lowest socioeconomic communities compared to Australia\u2019s.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Zealand shows no significant evidence of illicit trade while Australia has a rampant and often violent black market.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s vape ban is less effective at reducing smoking than New Zealand\u2019s more progressive approach, a new expert study suggests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study shows that smoking rates in New Zealand, where adults can buy vapes from any licensed retailers, have fallen twice as fast as in Australia where vapes can only legally be bought from chemists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/add.70006?domain=author&amp;token=T52NCXZKU5ZICVZPVSBU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The research<\/a>, published in the journal Addiction, says: \u201cThis study compared two neighbouring countries with very different vaping regulatory models but with similar tobacco control policies and population demographics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAustralia has a highly restrictive, prescription-only vaping policy, while New Zealand adopted a regulated consumer model.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October, Australia backpedaled on the prescription-only model but made vapes available to buy only from chemists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Zealand\u2019s smoking rate fell twice as fast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report found that adult daily smoking rates in New Zealand dropped by an average of 10 per cent per year &#8211; from 14.5 per cent to 6.8 per cent &#8211; from 2016 to 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Australia\u2019s smoking rate declined by only five per cent per year, from 12.2 per cent to 8.3 per cent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report\u2019s lead author Colin Mendelsohn, a harm reduction expert, said: \u201cThe findings suggest that more liberal regulation of nicotine vaping in Australia could speed up the reduction in smoking and improve health and financial disparities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcJu9dsGrk0Q8C_92Jh50rQeM-m-Ue-QKXZnfrSoBzq2r8zYYUKmTiSeKCnAx1xVpnVqTHqGelg26XidP-B1FzN2sR4gMS5x9JbPQKYEhR109iK6HXL8RDH1EzzTG1NGc311PMv?key=HX25sZUfZWuMkQqQembrp-SV\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: https:\/\/colinmendelsohn.com.au\/<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drop was especially notable in disadvantaged and indigenous populations. Smoking rates fell three times faster in New Zealand\u2019s lowest socioeconomic communities compared to Australia (12 per cent per year vs four per cent per year).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And smoking in New Zealand\u2019s M\u0101ori population declined almost three times as fast as among Australia\u2019s Indigenous population (16 per cent vs six per cent per year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendelsohn said: \u201cThese findings highlight the potential of vaping to reduce health and financial disparities by providing effective alternatives to smoking for high-risk groups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults in New Zealand have easy access to a wide range of regulated vapes, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/vapes-more-effective-for-quitting-smoking-than-nicotine-replacement-therapy-new-cochrane-review-finds\/\">proven to help smokers quit cigarettes<\/a>. Vapes are sold from licensed retailers in the same way as cigarettes and alcohol. Last month, the New Zealand government began handing out <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/new-zealand-gives-free-vaping-starter-kits-to-smokers-wanting-to-quit\/\">free vaping starter kits<\/a> to people who want to quit smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Australia has taken a <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/australias-hardline-vape-ban-starts-today-as-pharmacies-revolt\/\">highly restrictive approach<\/a> with vapes only legally available from pharmacies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendelsohn said: \u201cAustralia\u2019s restrictive, medical model for vaping has inadvertently fuelled a thriving and increasingly violent black market. However, most of this rise occurred prior to the introduction of regulation in New Zealand in 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdbg98r4zGKkG-U82bkvjM6MJ17gqtrHBpX7fqK--TvkNbvrf_1wk36tdSM4aHGfCkxsY7ISOTDhfKbYXcIC207g5mJykj4QallwrplPL2aI22lXRE7psj4ys6rCGq0JPLtmY3v?key=HX25sZUfZWuMkQqQembrp-SV\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/colinmendelsohn.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Mendelsohn-CP-et-al.-Do-the-differing-vaping-and-smoking-trends-in-Aus-and-NZ-reflect-different-regulatory-policies.-Addiction-2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>DOI: 10.1111\/add.70006<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, daily youth smoking hit record lows in both countries in 2023 (0.3 per cent in Australia and 1.2 per cent in New Zealand).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese findings suggest that vaping has not acted as a gateway to smoking but instead may be diverting young people away from combustible tobacco,\u201d said Mendelsohn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendelsohn said the \u201ccross-sectional\u201d nature of the study (where it tracks population trends rather than following individuals) means it cannot definitively prove vaping was the cause of the rapid fall in New Zealand smoking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he said alternative explanations are unlikely. \u201cAfter examining multiple possible explanations, researchers found no other credible factor to explain this dramatic decline,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf vaping is the key driver of this success, as appears likely, then Australia\u2019s current approach isn\u2019t just failing, it\u2019s costing lives..New Zealand has shown us what works &#8211;
