it could be changing how smokers think about quitting, a new commentary suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41937550\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The analysis<\/a>, published online in Addiction, looks at early evidence from England\u2019s \u201cSwap to Stop\u201d programme and argues that state endorsement itself may be a key driver of behaviour change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEngland\u2019s Swap to Stop programme was associated with increased vape assisted quit attempts,\u201d the author writes, adding that \u201cinstitutional endorsement may influence risk perceptions and cessation choices.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A measurable shift in quitting behaviour<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commentary highlights findings from a recent study showing that the rollout of the national scheme was linked to a sustained increase in smokers using vapes to try to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme \u201cwas associated with a sustained 1.5-percentage-point increase in the proportion of past-year smokers using vapes in a quit attempt,\u201d the paper says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That equates to \u201capproximately 125 000 additional vape-assisted quit attempts in the first year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers say this points to \u201cthe potential public health benefit of increasing the use of an evidence-based cessation aid.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More than just access<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the commentary argues the impact may go beyond simply handing out devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne possible explanation is that Swap to Stop functions not only as a material intervention, but also as a signal of institutional endorsement,\u201d it says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could matter in a landscape where many smokers remain unsure about the relative risks of vaping. \u201cHarm perceptions of e-cigarettes relative to combustible cigarettes have worsened in England since 2014,\u201d the paper notes, with many smokers now believing vaping to be \u201cequally or more harmful than smoking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These beliefs, the paper says, are \u201cassociated with a lower likelihood of using vaping in quit attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A signal from the state<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By being delivered through trusted health systems, the programme may help shift those perceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDelivery through National Health Services-affiliated and community services may increase the perceived credibility of vaping as a cessation method, thereby influencing behavioural choices,\u201d the commentary says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It adds that the scheme may work on two levels, \u201cboth as a clinical intervention, by distributing devices and as a symbolic one that communicates institutional approval of vaping as a cessation aid.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wider policy implications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings suggest that government signals &#8211;
