Switching to vaping could save smokers a whopping £1,699 per year, new research shows.

Researchers at Vape Superstore found that smokers in the UK spend £2,366 a year on cigarettes - over THREE TIMES as much as those who use a vaping kit.

Those using disposable vapes (31 per cent of all vapers) can expect to save £1,326 per year compared to smoking.

To put these figures into perspective, the average annual energy bill for a two to three person household in 2024 is £1,769, according to British Gas.

Currently you can buy disposable vapes for around £6, while the average price for a packet of 20 cigarettes is around £15.

A proposed vaping tax - set to come in from October 2026 - will see the cost of vaping e-liquid rise from £3 (per 10ml at 10mg strength) to £5.

Meanwhile a new tobacco duty means the cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes will rise from £13.49 to £16.

Even after the new vape levy kicks in, vaping will still be more than three times cheaper compared to a 10 a day smoking habit.

The most expensive countries in the world for smokers

The new study also reveals the most expensive countries in the world for smokers.

Australia tops the table, with a typical smoker spending £4,057 over a year. According to the average monthly salary, smokers in Australia can expect to spend 12 per cent of their income on cigarettes alone.

New Zealand comes in second with smokers spending £3,352 (12 per cent of the average salary), followed by Ireland at £2,413 (or eight per cent of the average salary).

At the bottom of the table is Switzerland, where smokers can expect to spend £1,478 per year on cigarettes, or two per cent of the average salary.

    Numbeo
was used to identify the cost of a packet of Marlboro cigarettes in each country, in which the countries were ranked according to its descending cost. The yearly cost is under the assumption that half a packet of cigarettes lasts one day

David Phillips of Vape Superstore said: “E-cigarettes have been endorsed by multiple health professionals as a means to quit smoking without inhaling the harmful toxins that are in traditional cigarettes.

“As well as being a healthier alternative, our research shows that smoking is much more expensive than using a vape kit; 77 per cent more expensive in fact. In a time when being conscious of spending is a top priority, it is positive to see that e-cigarettes are a far more cost effective option, in which you are able to save almost £2,000 each year.”

    FAQs

Campaigning can be difficult, especially if it's not your full time job, but we're here to make it simpler. In this section, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about legislative processes, advocacy strategies, and how you can effectively participate in shaping policies.

What is advocacy and how can I get involved?

Simply put, advocacy is organising a group of likeminded people who campaign for a change in government policy by talking to the people in power. This can take many forms, from posting on social media, to writing to your local politicians, to arranging meetings with the government or responding to consultations. We help by providing the information and tools you need to do this effectively.

How can I track the progress of legislation?

Government websites will usually contain a list of the legislative files that are in the process of becoming law. However, these kinds of websites are designed for legal and political professionals, and they can often be confusing for the general public. We help by keeping our ear to the ground, looking out for development in tobacco harm reduction proposals, and then make sure you have an easy-to-use summary.

What's the best way to contact my representatives?

Politicians are people too, and like everyone else, the best way to get messages to them varies from person to person. Some like email or even traditional mail, while others are constantly checking their social media feeds. They all have one thing in common though: they need to keep up to date with what matters to the people they represent. We help you find yours by keeping databases of politicians and candidates across Europe alongside all of their contact details, so you can quickly find out how to reach the person you need.

    Can I make a difference?

Yes! The only reason that harm reduction is still alive and kicking in Europe today is because people like you, with no political or campaigning background, took action to protect the availability of the products they rely on to stay smoke free. We've got lots of articles that talk about when and how this has happened in the past, which we hope will inspire you to get involved and make a difference.
